Case study: How does British School Muscat use Revas with their business studies students?

Revas proudly reaches one more corner of the world! Check how one of the schools in Oman teaches business management.

British School Muscat, one of the UK’s top international schools, started using Business Simulation Games this semester. British School Muscat is the only non-profit British school in Muscat, Oman. The school regularly ranks in the top 5 of the UK’s Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) ranking of international schools, top 3% of UK state schools and top 9% of UK independent schools. The school has been active for over 50 years, educating students between 3 and 18 years old. It owes its achievements to a curriculum based on teaching critical thinking, decision-making and challenging students.

HIGH PERFORMANCE LEARNING

British School Muscat is the 3rd international school that received the High Performance Learning (HPL) World Class School award. HPL methods develop the necessary skills, values, attitudes and qualities needed to succeed in learning, both in and out of school. Students learn how to be successful by using a consistent educational language that is shared by students and teachers. This enables students to think flexibly and creatively while developing self-regulation in the event of setbacks.

IMPACT OF THE VIRTUAL WORLD CHALLENGES ON REAL LIFE COMPETENCES

The school decided to implement Revas Business Simulation Games to give students the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge acquired during the lessons in practice. The simulations are part of the main goals of the school curriculum. The challenges in the game were intended to give students an impetus to analytical thinking and independent decision-making in a virtual environment.

“Revas immerse students in realistic business scenarios that require them to consider multiple factors, such as market conditions and financial performance. These experiences provide students with valuable insights into what it takes to run a successful business and prepare them for real-world challenges.” says Yoann Danion, British School Muscat teacher.

“Sometimes you are first and other times you make mistakes and end up last, you learn from your mistakes. Theas things happen in real life „ says one of the students.

LEARNING IN AND OUT OF THE SCHOOL CLASSROOM

Business Simulation Games are a key element in the curriculum for the year 10 students at British School Muscat. A group of 50 students tried their hands at running their own virtual Travel Agencies. Students use games both in class and at home to refine their business strategies, respond to changes in demand and to adjust to the situation on the market.

“Through Revas, students reflect on their past decisions and continuously improve their business strategies both in and out of the classroom. Overall, 97% of our students perceived Revas as a valuable tool that supported their learning in Business.” adds Yoann Danion.

WHAT DO STUDENTS GET OUT OF SUCH COURSE?

When students were asked what features (based on the assumptions of High Performance Learning) the game develops in their opinion, they answered that these are, among others: Creating, Combining and Analyzing. “Revas supports the HPL characteristics of linking since we need to use our knowledge gained from month to month.”

“Analysing – When a new round starts we have to check which supplies have been used/wasted. From this we can tell which packages the customers prefer and how we are able to focus on promoting those packages more.”

“It supports Creating as while your trying to improve your business on Revas, you would need to have flexible thinking and be able to abandon one idea for a better one, as well as being able to have fluent thinking and generate ideas and to also have revolutionary thinking, so to be able to create new ideas through building on existing one or possibly even coming up with something original.”
